Thursday - back to Charleston
Last time I went to Charleston I spent the whole day, more or less, at the naval museum and I thought I left of the city untouched. So I went back there today to check out the old town, a large indoor / outdoor market and generally fossick. I really wish I had known my way around better and that the sun had been out as there are some gorgeous old homes - not the antebellum slave owners' gin palaces but brightly painted two storey wooden houses packed tightly together. I nearly brought home a couple of back bumpers from nosing at them.
So I parked instead by said market and wandered through. Expense being no object, I decided to buy a lavish chocolate bar at one stand until I discovered it was 7 bucks which I thought was steep in much the same way as the Matterhorn is. So I settled on a couple of goodies for sundry kids.
On the way home I came across a Lowe's supermarket and wandered around that like a lost soul failing to find what I had gone in for and making a few too many impulse purchases. I bought some delicious lactose-free cheese (how the hell do you make lactose-free cheese?) which I didn't realise was lactose-free until I'd had it sliced and didn't want to look a prat. Also a pre-cooked chicken which, when I got it home, I discovered had been kept warm for 5 hours. It was pretty disgusting so I'll probably curry it. (Gosh, what a surprise!)
